What does Radler mean?
As the story goes, Radler was invented on a hot summer day in 1922 during a bicycle race in Bavaria. Franz Xavier Kugler's café was located along the cycling route, and when 13,000 cyclists descended upon him, he began to run out of beer. To prevent this from happening, he decided to mix it with lemonade.
Not only did this bright idea result in a refreshing drink, but it also stopped the cyclists from falling off their bikes drunk! This story might explain why the mixture is known as 'radler', which means 'cyclist' in German.
